Exploring New Organic Products

Agriculture in Wales is dominated by red meat and dairy, but there are opportunities in other areas of agriculture for organics. Part of our work is to examine these new products and how we can add value to some of the things you are already doing. BOBL has explored three main products, wool, thatching straw and organic herbage seed:

Wool: Wool is enjoying something of a revival at the moment. Working with farmers, processors and designers, we are helping to develop a supply chain to produce dresses, jumpers, curtains, cushion covers, boot linings and much more from Welsh organic wool. That could mean business opportunities for everyone from farmers through to designers. Find out more here

Thatching straw: Organic straw is highly prized by thatchers. The lower nitrogen conditions make it tougher and more resistant to rot, and prices of £600 700/tonne are quite achievable. Most farmers who can produce an arable grain crop can also grow for straw. There are many differences in the labour, equipment and techniques for harvesting and processing. Find out more here

Organic herbage seed: Demand for organic seed is strong, and is set to increase when the proportion of non-organic seed allowed in mixtures increases from 30% to 35% next year. Working with the plant breeding and extension colleagues in IBERS we are assessing the feasibility of seed production in Wales.
