Transformative education and food

A paper produced by authors from Organic Centre Wales, Swansea University, Glyndwr University and the Centre for Alternative Technology discusses what people need to learn about sustainable food systems, how they learn it, and how this education might lead to genuine change in society.

Drawing on practical experience from Welsh projects, the paper describes how understanding and behavioural change reinforce each other, and how they work on many levels, according to the needs of learners. It is intended to stimulate further discussion and the Food Working Group plan to hold events at which people with very different perspectives on the food chain farmers, wholesalers, caterers, conservationists, local government can discover common ground and investigate their differences, driving the learning process further.

'Transformative education and food: thoughts from Wales' is the first publication of the Food Working Group of the Wales Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) in education for sustainable development and global citizenship (ESDGC), which was recognized by the UN University in 2010.
