Rhug Estate looks abroad for sales after winning top export award

RHUG Estate scooped a top award for exports at this year's Wales True Taste Food and Drink Awards.

The 2,500 acre organic farm, in Denbighshire, was awarded gold in the Welsh Export category based on the strength of its success over the last 12 months.

The business, which employs 80 people, currently sells around 16% of its meat to overseas markets including Hong Kong, Singapore and Macao, and is hoping to expand its international customer base further.

Sales manager Joan Redmond said: “Our organic certification is extremely important in the UK but even more so with our customers in the Far East, who are both health-conscious and also seek reassurance that the animals are properly cared-for.

“The value of the Rhug brand has grown over the last 10 years and, together with the European PGI status for lamb and beef and our organic certification, has meant that our products have become sought after across the world.”

Tony Little from Organic Centre Wales, added: “As Welsh standards are backed in law by EU regulations it gives customers in export markets the confidence they need to buy Welsh.” read more
