Organic Producer SurveyAll organic producers have been contacted and all the required data collected for the 2013 Organic Producer Survey. Colleagues from Organic Centre Wales are analysing the information and send a big thank you to everyone that took the time to speak to them.
During early November an initial 988 introduction letters were sent out and subsequently successful telephone contact was made with 702 producers (71%). It is already clear that a 1/5th of those contacted have already ceased to be certified as organic or intend to do so by the end of the year. The reason(s) given for the reversion to a “conventional” management scheme have been collected and will be statistically analysed but include the expense of feed costs, lack of a premium at sale and uncertainty with the organic farming scheme.
A comprehensive report will be available in the New Year on the Organic Centre Website which will quantify the views collected and will look in detail at the movement (and aspirations) in the various organic enterprises.
