Organic Market – Meat and Livestock
Graig Producers report April 2010 by Nigel Elgar
Organic Hoggetts are in desperately short supply and shortages are likely to remain until June when the new season lambs become available in number. Under thirty month beef and over thirty month beef prices are not changing at present but organic OTM cattle are getting more difficult to find. Store cattle are in strong demand and prices are reflecting this.
All round lamb price increase
Fewer sheep are being reared in the UK compared to a decade ago. Supply is down and prices up. Meat processors are concerned that price rises will make lamb less affordable. According to the Meat Trades Journal, the price of conventional minced lamb is now £9.45 a kilo, up 21 per cent on the same week a year ago, when it was £7.83. Lamb chops have seen a jump of 11 per cent, with chops trading for £11.64 a kilo. The weak pound has encouraged farmers to export to France and the Middle East. One in three of all lambs reared so far this year have been exported.
