Organic farming Glastir update

The Welsh Government has outlined its proposals to support organic farming for the remainder of the current Rural Development programme (to December 2013). In a key change, farmers will no longer have to join Glastir to access organic support. Instead, farmers already in the Organic Farming Scheme (OFS) will be offered extensions to their existing agreements which will take them up the end of the current RDP period. In addition, windows for applications for conversion support will be open later this year and in 2012, both for farmers considering organic management for the first time and for existing organic farmers to increase their organic land area.

Dywedodd Sue Fowler, cyfarwyddwr Canolfan Organig Cymru, y byddai'r camau yn rhoi hwb mawr i'r sector organig yng Nghymru.

Sue Fowler, director of Organic Centre Wales said the measures would give the Welsh organic sector a huge lift.

She said: “We would now encourage farmers to utilise the Glastir application surgeries. Officials will help organic farmers reach the required points threshold for the All Wales Element.”

The Welsh Government provides the Organic Conversion Information Service (OCIS) which aims to ensure that farmers considering organic farming can do so on the basis of complete and accurate information. OCIS provides a helpline, initial information pack and up to three, free, on-farm advisory visits. For more information contact Organic Centre Wales on 01970 622100 or .
