Spring festival 2014

Organic Centre Wales had a hand in organising the '10 Minute Talk Shop' at this year's Spring Festival at the RWAS Showground. Over the two days we covered a range of topics from growing wildflower meadows to feasting on sweet chilly meal worms! Here are some of the highlights.

Jane Davidson launched the One Planet Council, an independent voluntary body which enables and promotes ways for people to live with genuinely sustainable social, economic and environmental benefits. It supports affordable housing, self-employment and land based productivity. Land is regenerated, boosting biodiversity and biocapacity. Locally-grown food and produce is made available to local communities.

Roger Key, chairman of the Board of Trustees at Garden organic made an impassioned plea for action on the draft EU Seed regulations that could potentially have disastrous impacts on conservation and heritage varieties, and for non-food crops such as wildflowers. Although the proposals had been voted down by the European Parliament, there was still a chance the Commission would press ahead with it.

Juliet Morris, an organic wool producer from Brechfa in Carmarthen, spoke of her passion for organic Welsh wool and the work she has been doing with Organic Centre Wales to promote it. The project has worked hard to win the interest of designers, upholsterers, retailers and textile agent with some success. At the same time work is underway with the Wool Board, wool buyers and processors to make sure we can deliver the right quantities of the right grades to the people who want to use it.
