Providing information on organic food and farming in Wales
Newtown Sustainable Food Community
The Newtown sustainable food community project worked with Mid Wales Land & Food Trust and Cwm Harry Food Company to develop three initiatives involving local school children. These initiatives provided excellent opportunities for schools to incorporate hands-on educational activities to connect children with food sourcing and production.
Growing for the Box
The Mid Wales Land Trust and Cwm Harry undertook 'Growing for the box' with Brynllywarch Hall School in Newtown. Working with a mixed sixth form group, Growing for the Box provided a range of classroom activities and practical elements to enable students to grow harvest and sell their produce. On the success of the project a resource pack 'Growing Enterprise' was produced for schools and teachers in order to facilitate more local growing projects being integrated alongside curriculum work. Cob in a cob
Cob in a Cob took place with Machynlleth School over four days to plan, build and cook a celebratory meal with their new cob oven. Pupils and teachers were supported in education activities in addition to the practical elements of building the oven, such as organic recipes, history of bread making and farming communities. Cob in a Cob was a successful project enjoyed by all and the oven will now continue to be used by the local community in the future, find out more here
The Big Apple
The big apple project took place in 2012 and involved school children from Llanidloes and provided pupils with practical experience of local fruit juice production. Children worked with local group Dragonfly Solutions to harvest unwanted local apples, and used commercial juicing equipment to create their own apple juice. This project reinforced learning about food technology and encouraged the children to use this knowledge at home. Find out more here
