The Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) is an internationally-recognised research and teaching centre providing a unique base for research in response to global challenges such as food security, bioenergy and sustainability, and the impacts of climate change. IBERS has been at the forefront of organic farming in Wales for over 20 years, and the lead partner in Organic Centre Wales since its establishment in 2000. It makes an important contribution to every aspect of organic farming. Projects such as PROSOIL link scientific research on soil management techniques to best practice on farm while grass and clover varieties bred at IBERS are the cornerstone of many organic livestock systems and contribute vital fertility to Wales' soils.
IBERS has an excellent track record of translating research, innovation and farmer knowledge and experience into better financial and environmental performance for organic farmers. It plays a central role in Farming Connect programmes past and present and has a dedicated [link:www.grassdevcentre.co.uk::Grassland Development Centre that includes organic expertise.
It coordinates the Europe-wide Sustainable Organic and Low Input Dairy (SOLID) project , and plays a central in other projects such as CANtogetherwhich researches mixed farming systems.
Beyond the farm gate IBERS has made a major contribution to organic market intelligence, developing new and existing markets, streaming lining supply chains through the Better Organic Business Links (BOBL) Project.
The annual organic producer survey is carried out by the Farm Business Survey and provides crucial information to producers, marketing and supply organisations and policy makers.
With the RDP for Wales in place, enhanced opportunities for farmer participatory research through the European Innovation Partnership, a new Farming Connect programme and other opportunities, IBERS remains in a unique position support organic producers in Wales for the future.
