School meal project, Cardiff

serving food
As part of OCW's BOBL project, organic and local vegetables were served to children at Kitchener Primary School in Riverside, Cardiff on 24 November 2009.
The project was coordinated by the Riverside Community Market Association and Cardiff Catering.

Because of the high proportion of Muslim and Hindu children Cardiff Catering decided to serve leek and potato soup to everyone, making the event inclusive for vegetarian and packed lunch children. Carrots and broccoli were also served as accompaniment to the main meal.

School governors, the farmers who grew the vegetables and community representatives attended the meal.

Vegetables were sourced from an organic farm near Abergavenny, and bread came from a local baker.

Children from Year 4 took part in a session about local and seasonal food run by FACE Cymru, and helped to chop the vegetables for the soup and as an accompaniment to the main course.

Afterwards, the local Food Coop sold bags of fruit, vegetables, stir-fry ingredients or salad to the parents as they came to collect their children.

The parents were also given soup and a recipe leaflet.
