![]() Organic food in schoolsThere's no reason why school meals should not include a proportion of organic food. Sourced locally and in season, it is competitively priced and shows that a school is making a commitment to sustainable farming. Organic food can also feature in school tuck shops or projects such as school farmers markets or food co-ops.![]() School mealsOCW is carrying out school meal projects around Wales as part of Better Organic Business Links, a new project which started in 2009. The aim of the projects is to bring local food (including organic food) to the school kitchen and connect children with farming and the food chain. The first two of these took place in November 2009 in Abergele and Cardiff. Organic food is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government's school meal action plan, Appetite for Life. Farmers marketsFarmers markets in schools were pioneered by the Mid Wales Food and Land Trust. The overall aim of school farmers markets is to 'reconnect children to food and farming' in a local setting. If your school would like to have one, contact on 0117 914 2422 or download our guide.
