School meal project, Abergele

serving food
As part of OCW's BOBL project, an organic and local food school meal was held at Sant Elfod, Glan Gele and Glan Morfa primary schools in Abergele, Conwy, on 12 November 2009. The menu for the day was roast lamb. child with tray

The meat was sourced from two local farms, one of them organic; carrots, cabbage and apples came from a market garden in Conwy; leeks were from Flintshire; and Welsh organic potatoes were sourced from an organic distributor in Conwy.

The dessert was apple crumble with a white sauce made from organic milk, and the children were also offered a selection of organic and local yogurts.

Councillors, governors, farmers and other members of the community were invited to the meals, which followed several weeks of educational activities in school. Pupils completed projects of their own choosing, and one school sent its School Nutrition Action Group to visit a local farm, as well as inviting local farmers into the the classroom to talk about what they do.

The meal was followed by a farmers' market in the school grounds.
