Schmallenberg virus – a novel viral disease

A new virus called Schmallenberg virus has been reported in cattle, sheep and goats.

This virus appears to belong to a group of viruses that are spread by insects, mostly midges and mosquitoes. Farmers and vets have been made aware of this new disease and they should remain vigilant for any signs that could indicate infection with Schmallenberg Virus.
