As part of the BOBL project, Organic Centre Wales has been looking at ways in which organic feed, especially poultry feed, can become more sustainable. This short film outlines some of the key issues and the following publications take a closer look at two potential solutions.
De hulling protein crops: If we can improve the quality of our home grown protein crops we can significantly increase their inclusion rates, reduce our reliance on imported soya and potentially bring feed costs down. Removing the hull from crops such peas, beans and lupins in one way in which this can be achieved. For more details read this leaflet. Tony Little will be organizing a trip to look at de-hulling machines towards the end of September, so if you are interested in coming along please contact him on the details below.
The potential for oil seed crops to replace soya: This leaflet takes a different approach to the issue and looks at the potential of sunflower and oilseed rape to replace soya from both a nutritional and an agronomic perspective. The booklet is a short summary of a much more detailed report.
The booklets are also available as printed copies, so if you prefer to receive your copy in this format, contact
