A NEW Centre of Excellence for pollinators is being proposed in an action plan to halt the loss of bees in Wales.
Consultations launched by the Welsh Government this week also include plans to improve flowering habitats across farmland.
This may involve a new organic farming scheme and the provision of grants for smallholders to create hedgerow buffers and orchards.
The proposed action plan also has a commitment to removing or reduce use of pesticides and inorganic fertiliser in a future Glastir scheme.
Launching the consultation, which runs until June 4, natural resources minister Alun Davies said: “Despite their importance, pollinator numbers have been on the decline for the last 30 years and if we don’t take prompt action, this trend will continue.
“It is my intention to launch the Action Plan for Pollinators, which will be the first of its kind in the UK, during the 2013 Royal Welsh Show.”
