Growing food in the community

The Welsh Assembly Government has launched an action plan to promote community grown food in Wales.

Community growing has become very popular in recent years, in response to concerns about food security, climate change and health and well-being. A list of such projects is available from the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens.

Tony Little of OCW said: “I warmly welcome this action plan. We have been promoting community involvement in food production for some time, for example through Community Supported Agriculture and by strengthening links between schools and farms, and it is great that the Welsh Assembly Government has recognised the importance of this type of work and is supporting it.

“I am also pleased that we are able to use funding from our Better Organic Business Links (BOBL) project to promote Community Supported Agriculture. We will be promoting the concept among communities and producers, funding feasibility studies for the establishment of new projects, providing a helpline service and establishing a network of mentor projects throughout Wales”.
