Standards and certificationThe word ‘organic’ is a legal term and is regulated at three levels: • An EU regulation sets out the principles, aims and overarching rules of organic production and defines how organic products are to be labelled • DEFRA is the ‘Competent authority’ in the UK. This means it provides guidance on how the EU regulation should be implemented here, and oversees the certification system, on behalf of the Welsh Government. • Organic control bodies (often called certification bodies) implement the standards at farm level. All organic producers must be certified with a control body, who carry out an annual inspection. | |
